Every entry in our database comes from the federal HRSA Health Center Service Delivery and Look-Alike Sites dataset, the official registry of federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs). FQHCs are required by federal law to provide a comprehensive primary-care service set — which includes pediatric and family dental care — to anyone who walks in, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.
Start by clicking your state above. Each state page includes:
- A plain-language summary of Medicaid dental coverage for children in that state, including the official program name (PeachCare, ARKids, MaineCare, MIChild, etc.).
- The CHIP income eligibility threshold (as a percentage of the federal poverty level) and a quick income-by-family-size table.
- A directory of every active community health center site in the state, sorted by city.
Once you've picked a clinic, you can call directly to book an appointment. Most community health centers offer same-week pediatric appointments, and many run dedicated kids' dental days where families can drop in without an appointment for cleanings, fluoride, and screenings.
What makes a community health center different?
Community health centers (CHCs) are non-profit clinics funded in part by the U.S. Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA). The federal funding comes with strings attached — namely that the clinic must serve any patient regardless of insurance, must operate on a sliding-fee scale tied to household income, and must provide a comprehensive set of services that includes preventive and restorative dental care.
For families navigating Medicaid, CHIP, or no insurance at all, this matters enormously. A private dental practice can refuse Medicaid patients (and many do, citing low reimbursement rates). A community health center cannot. That's why SmileFinder focuses exclusively on this dataset — these are the clinics most likely to actually see your child this month.
